Own Your Commute – Go ZERO!

Paid partnership with Zero Motorcycles

Electric motorcycles have started to become more commonplace in recent years, with riders following in the wheeltracks of their four-wheeled brethren.

While they’re not necessarily for everyone, one of the biggest attractions of electric motorcycles is the way in which they combine massive, instantly delivered torque with ease of use, low running costs and a ‘magic carpet’ ride that’s unique to electric vehicles.

But, up until now, one of the biggest barriers to ownership has been the cost of buying a full-power electric motorcycle. Although the bikes have always generally made sense for high-mileage riders – whose cost per mile goes down when factoring in the cheaper fuel and reduced maintenance costs – the initial buying price has been off-putting, if not completely unaffordable, to some.

But Zero Motorcycles, the brand that has pioneered electric streetbikes, is planning to change all that. The Californian company has recently reduced its prices and put together some very competitive finance packages, which mean you can ride away on one of its bikes for less than the cost of a weekly tube pass.

Having moved its production facilities earlier in the year, Zero is starting to pass on its reduced costs to consumers. Prices have dropped by up to £3500 on some models, with brand-new, unregistered bikes available from £9995 – or just £150 a month for those buying on a PCP. At a time when the cost of living is higher than ever before, every pound saved counts; and by taking charge and owing your commute with a new Zero, you’ll quickly see these savings take effect.

The company is targeting commuters with its ‘Own Your Commute’ initiative, showcasing its easy-to-access 11kw models, which can be ridden legally after completing a day’s training.

The Zero FXE, and the bigger, more powerful S and DS, can all be charged up at home (or the office) through a regular three-pin plug, making them super-cheap to run. The FXE, with its 7.2kWh battery, costs about £2 to fully charge and delivers a range of up to 100 miles in the city, equivalent to about 300mpg from a petrol bike, and benefits from much lower routine maintenance than a traditional internal combustion powered machine. The larger S and DS benefit from a battery of double the capacity, meaning almost double the range, with a price starting at £9,995, or £150 a month – about the same as the cheapest monthly travelcard on the London Underground.

Dale Robinson, Zero Motorcycles’ UK country manager, explained the attraction of electric motorcycles to the daily commuter. “We’ve listened to our dealers and what potential customers were telling us, and we’ve worked hard to be in a position where our prices are very attractive to commuters as well as leisure riders. These bikes are so easy and inexpensive to run. There’s no ULEZ and in most cases commuters can go door-to-door with no parking charges either. The bikes are so easy to ride and can be ridden after a day’s CBT training, so there’s no need to go through a full motorcycle licence test.

“Rather than spending £40 or more a week on public transport, we want to give commuters the opportunity to own their commute for about £35 (2022 FXE) – giving them an alternative that in many cases will be faster, more enjoyable and more flexible than taking the bus or tube, while giving them an asset they can own at the end of the PCP agreement.”

On top of the price reduction on new 2022 and 2023 models, official Zero dealers also have a range of like-new, low-mileage demo models available with up to 15% off already reduced prices.
