When it comes to enjoying your motorcycle, personal safety should be paramount in every rider’s mind – not only being aware of other traffic around and your riding ability, but also the kit you’re wearing. While most of us now ensure that we buy quality CE-approved clothing, and often also opt to wear a CE-approved back protector too, a growing number of us are also now choosing to add that extra protection offered by an airbag system. In&Motion’s integrated Airbag technology explained…

On the go and once activated by the rider, the airbag’s sensors continually measure and assess the rider’s movement at a rate of over 1000 analyses per second – using this data it can detect and even anticipate a fall. Once triggered, the airbag inflates in less than 60 milliseconds to offer the rider the best protection possible, even before the first impact has occurred.

And with all the data collected anonymously from thousands of airbag users across the world – who to date have collectively covered more than 97 million miles (roughly the distance from the earth to the sun…) – the algorithms are continually monitored and optimised by In&Motion, forever improving this rapidly-advancing safety technology. It is this perpetual refinement that ensures that false deployments of the airbag system are incredibly rare, if at all! Statistically the chances of In&Motion’s standalone system being falsely deployed is slim to none – yet when using a mechanically activated (lanyard pullcord) airbag this may not be the case.

How is the airbag technology in RST clothing activated?

While in its early days airbag technology was prohibitively expensive and often awkward to use, RST and In&Motion have worked hard to not only reduce the cost of such systems but also improve their ease of use. The airbag itself is a totally standalone product with no connection to the motorcycle. It has a removable battery with 30-hours of continuous battery life. It also only takes around three hours to recharge. Swapping modes and checking the health of the airbag is easily done via the free ‘My In&Motion’ app (available on both iOS and Android devices) and the best part is that all updates to both the system and the software can be upgraded simply with access to the app.

Their products are available in an accessible and affordable subscription. For a monthly fee of just £12 (or £120 a year) you can lease a control box that gives you full access to one complete detection mode (either Road, Track or Adventure) with the option to add more modes for an extra fee via the free ‘My In&Motion’ app. Each system has an unlimited warranty, and the option to cancel at any time. After three years of continual leasing, you can even opt to buy the box outright for a one-off fee.

RST Integrated Airbag Range: One Brain, One Subscription, Endless Jackets…

Once you have started a subscription to In&Motion’s airbag (or bought one outright for a one-off payment of £400), the activated control box can be used across a range of compatible jackets, again saving you cash. So if you want to go touring in an RST airbag-compatible Pro Series Paragon 6 adventure jacket you just need to plug the airbag control box in and away you go. And when you get home and fancy a short jeans and jacket ride in the sun, simply swap the control box to an RST Sabre Airbag leather jacket and you will again be fully protected.

Taking advantage of this lifesaving technology really couldn’t be easier. And should the system need to deploy due to impact, unlike some other airbag systems which require sending back to the manufacturer for resetting, the In&Motion system’s inflator can be changed at home with new inflator costing just £89.99 – and the airbag system can be reused as long as it hasn’t been compromised in the accident.
