Next up: Ride & brakesIt’s been a long time since 125cc motorbikes were really desirable, especially in the current four-stroke era. Japanese offerings have become less inspiring and more expensive over the years and you could basically write off what you paid for a cheap Chinese runabout as it reduced to a pile of rust in the first sprinkle of rain. But the Zontes ZT 125 G1 Scrambler is different.
It follows the same ‘neo retro’ style as bikes like the Husqvarna Svartpilen and Honda CB1000R. Bodywork is sculpted and it’s peppered with detail giving the Zontes the feel of a bike costing a lot more, making it tempting not just for new riders, but for experienced commuters, too.
It’s as tight and 'together' as any of its more established rivals, looks great, is equipped and great to ride. The latest generation Zontes have proved to be durable and reliable, too. Not bad for a 125 that costs less than three-grand.
It’s not all Superleggeras and ice cream. New Zontes Scramber ZT 125 is a little cracker and only £2999.99. Top speed: 65mph uphill, 70mph on the flat...74mph downhill with a run-up. pic.twitter.com/pp99O7IDQP

Ride quality & brakes
Next up: EngineSpoked wheels and dual purpose 17" CST CM-ADD tyres are there for the style than to rough it off-road, but there’s plenty of grip and ride quality is decent with no crashes or bangs from its soft suspension.
Steering is neutral, it’s nimble through traffic and front and rear brakes have all the power you need. It has a natural, spaced-out riding position that’s roomy enough for taller riders but being a naked, expect to get it in the neck from the elements.
Engine
Next up: ReliabilityThe Zontes is compact, easy to ride and power from its belt and braces liquid cooled 14.5bhp 125cc four-stroke engine is delivered cleanly. It might sound uninspiring, like all four-stroke 125s, but it has the pep to keep up with traffic and when you want to get a move on it bangs excitedly into its rev limiter in the lower gears. After that it saunters up to an easy 70mph, plus change, but its tall top gear is more like a cruisy overdrive.
The peak power of 14.5bhp is just under the 15bhp limit imposed on 125s for learner riders on a CBT and A1 licence holders. Others in the category achieve the full 15bhp (or claim to) but many fall short of the Zontes's power.
Reliability & build quality
Next up: ValueBodywork, engine and chassis are so well finished you could easily pass it off as 125 costing thousands more if you slapped a Honda or Yamaha badge on the tank. Whether it’s durable over time is another question, but the latest generation Zontes have proved to be reliable and durable. It’s a class act.
Our Zontes ZT 125 G1 owners' reviews show no prevailing problems you need to worry about.
Value vs rivals
Next up: EquipmentIt’s one of the best equipped 125s around, making it great value for money, especially when you can pay up to a grand more for a Japanese or European naked.
Popular, albeit more expensive, rivals include the Bullit Hero 125, Lexmoto Tempest GT 125 and Honda CB125F.

Equipment
Few 125s come with such big bike detailing. It has a huge 20-litre fuel tank for a 125 (which explains its high kerb weight), so you’ll rarely need to fill up, an LCD dash, bar end mirrors, lever protectors, chunky switchgear, bronze-finish USD forks, yokes and bars, a comfy seat, LED lights, crash bars and protectors, an underslung stainless-steel pipe, bellypan, radiator shroud and inside out banana swingarm. It also comes with a two-year warranty.
There are also quite a few aftermarket parts available from various firms to customise your bike. Fancy a Zontes ZT 125 exhaust, to make your bike sound fruitier? There are plenty on offer...

If you fancy a bit of knobbly-tyred supermoto style from your 125 the ZT125-U1 has the same engine and chassis as the Scrambler with keyless ignition and off-road inspired bodywork. A sports naked ZT125-U completes the new range at a few hundred quid less.

A fantastic all rounder. comfortable, nimble, reliable and still a head turner 1 year on.
Plush, comfortable, nimble. ABS works really well and has saved me a couple of times from inattentive cagers. Can do 2 hours uninterrupted ride before needing a break if on the dual carriageways but could probably do all day on the twisties. In stock format it is awful on the open road due to it being naked. I added a PUIG screen (free from a friend usually about £40-50) and it makes it so much more comfortable while still looking good on the bike.
Quite a lot of torque for a 125. Little bit of a flat spot around 5-6k rpm when pulling off which is to be expected. Can easily keep up with traffic but 74mph is your absolute limit. Will happily bounce of the rev limiter at 10.5k in every gear. Considering dropping a couple of teeth on the rear or adding one on the front sprocket. I would love a V-Twin 250cc version of this bike.
Mine has lived outside for just over a year. Despite being washed only twice and with 8,000 miles in all conditions, it is still spotless with no rust apart from on the chrome stem cap (which is understandable, being chrome, I should really replace this with another one). Only one other niggle is the MAP sensor has had an intermittent fault but I seem to have solved this (loose wire?)The fit and finish all over is still bang on. Just done a deep clean (it's 3rd wash) full service (air/oil filter, chain and sprockets) and it is back to show room condition. I've seen keeways and lexmotos that live in a garage turn to rust within 6 months. This is not a cheap chinese bike by any stretch of the imagination.
Got a service kit from ALiexpress for about £25 and spent £75 on chain and sprockets although in hindsight, there was no wear on the sprockets at all so I would have been better spending the £75 on a really good DID x ring chain instead. At least I know for next time. Fuel is good if taking it easy on the throttle but when does anyone ever do that on a 125?
For a 125 at this price, it is decently equipped. Bosch ABS and EFI. Lights are absolutely brilliant and clear. I've added heated grips, screen, quadlock and the U1 hand guards. Which makes life a little more comfortable.I am considering adding shad hard luggage to this and turning it into a dirt cheap to run adventure bike/ winter hack.

A great learner legal 125
ABS works well and the disk provide ample stopping power.
It does sound good once you open the throttle and I would say it’s probably as quick as you will find for a 125cc.
So far no problems and the general finish / quality if materials seems very good
These bikes come with ABS, slipper clutch, tubeless tyres, tyre pressure sensors, back lit switch gear ! Japanese equivalents with this amount of tech cost on average circa £1500 more - I looked at many bikes before buying this one. Personally I think their closest rivals on price points are Mutts, but the Zontes looked and felt much better built with way more tech. No comparison really.
Every extra you could wish for as standard, even USB points.
Buying experience: £3500 on the road.

I bought my bike based on this review and the recommendation of my bike dealer. the best feature is the overall style and the comfortable riding position. The slipper clutch is very forgiving and can get up to road speed very quickly. but would it have hurt to put a small wind deflector on there as in bad weather you really feel it in your chest. Lots to choose from in the aftermarket area though. Back break pedal seems like a stretch sometimes. I have three friends just starting out and have told them to ignore the anti Chinese bike rhetoric and try the Zontes before you buy Traditional Japanese Makes.
Easily ride for an hour but that quickly turns into the need for a coffee break.
six gears is different and first is only to get you away. six does feel like a cruise gear when training on a slow turn the bike does not know whether first or second is best.
Hugely impressed by the build Quality and spec on this bike , The control switches lighting up and there is no real issue with corrosion except the break discs which just need a light cleaning. Unfortunately I got rear ended and the bike sustained very little rear damage.(number plate, wheel arch and not much more due to the excellent bars surrounding the engine. Even though the bike was right under the vehicle. Absolutely no issue with parts and the bike was repaired in a week.
great service from my dealer and The 20 litre tank draws comment from all who think it is a much larger bike.
Not a fan of panniers or top boxes as this bike is really cool naked
Buying experience: Dealer bought and my wife paid for it as a birthday present. Dealer made me feel very special on the day and couldn't fault their years of experience Even registered it on my birthday so we share that lovely day. I am 64 and it makes me feel like I am a teenager again.

Mediu Quality Bike on long term !
Working as specified by manufacturer.
Power cut - out in heavy rain !! Very dangerous moments !
The bike is OK, well build at first sight !
250£ on 5000 Miles ! Huge payments for a small bike , £1.20 per minute of mechanical assistance.
Spareparts are very dificult to find, usually cost more than for the japanese. Like 2-3 times more !
Buying experience: OK. Was next day available! Japanese had the waiting list 6 month on my purchase date !

Undoubtedly the best of the 125 market - I owned mine for less than a year because of an accident, which was declared as a write off. I had a lexmoto maxi scooter before having this and wouldn’t get anything apart from another one of these. Fantastic bikes, easy to ride, just Make sure that you get additional batteries for the fob before doing anything for the keyless models
Abs put me at ease and never got off feeling queasy or unwell
Mileage at the time was about 100 every 3 days so filled up once, maybe twice a week max
Buying experience: Easiest bike I’ve purchased while it was on finance, it was amazingly easy.

Quality bike for a competative price and I would highly recommend to anyone buying in the future to compare to some of the other well known brands and see what you are getting for your money I think you will be pleasently surprised.
Buying experience: Dealer: Stevelin Motorcycles, Ramsey, Cambridgeshire. £2999+otr excellent service.

So pleased with the bike, she doesn't feel like a 125. maybe the gearing is a little short lower down 1st-3rd, but it's totally fine.
Its a lovely bike to ride very flickable, tyres are grippy and planted trust levels keep rising. The breaks are Excellent!
So far so good. Only done 300miles. I'm still bedding in the engine.
Solid wee bike. Everything feels quality.
I entered £100 as I'll be servicing her myself. 4l of good oil. £25. Oil filter £10. Coolant is a couple of quid. I will only do around 1500miles a year.
All the equipment, switches, dash display and lights look and feel great.
