City slicker scoot: Suzuki unveil new Burgman Street 125 EX

In less than four months, Suzuki’s scooter range has quadrupled. At the start of the summer, the UK market had just the A2-friendly Burgman 400, but now a trio of 125s have arrived, with the latest being the Burgman Street 125 EX.

The new Burgman joins the Avenis 125 and Address 125, that were first seen back in July, and looks set to challenge Honda’s all conquering PCX125 for a share of the sales in a buoyant low-capacity scooter market.

Suitable to be ridden on either a CBT or A1 licence, the new machine is powered by a 124cc single-cylinder engine packing a manageable 8.4bhp and 7.4lbft of torque. Hardly a Hayabusa, it will be best used around town – carrying its 112kg mass between lines of traffic and returning a claimed 148.67mpg.

Translating to 180 miles from its 5.5-litre fuel tank, this efficiency is boosted further by stop-start technology, which is a first for a Suzuki model and reduces the amount of time the engine is spent idling. As emissions regulations get tighter in city centres, features like this could become increasingly important.

And, when the dinky fuel-injected 32.5kg engine fires back into life you’re likely not to notice thanks to a ‘Silent Start System’, which is said to get the bike going smoothly and quietly to improve riding refinement.

Away from the motor, the chassis comes in the form of an under-bone frame using large-diameter, thin, round pipe in a bid to save weight. This is suspended by non-adjustable forks and a mono shock. Linked braking is also a feature, rather than ABS.

Moving away from the structure, the whole thing is wrapped in a thoroughly modern, mini-maxi scooter set of bodywork, which borrows styling traits from it’s Burgman 400 older sibling.

Dressed with LED lighting, plus a small screen to keep the elements at bay, riders also get a long padded seat providing space for two people, with 21.5 litres of storage underneath and two pockets up front.

There are also two utility hooks for hanging shopping in the footwell and a USB port to charge your electronic devices. Helping to deter unwanted attention from thieves is also a neat system that covers the ignition barrel to prevent tampering.

Moving upwards from the ignition, the bike also gets an LCD dash displaying speed, fuel gauge, mileage, clock and more. If you’re particularly mindful of the planet, a green ‘Suzuki Eco Drive Indicator’ also lights up in the bottom left corner to tell the rider they are using the bike efficiently.

Away from the standard bike, the Burgman can also be equipped with a number of accessories, including a 27-litre top box, heated grips, pillion grab handles and more.

Suzuki Burgman Street 125 EX in detail

Rubber side down: The Burgman rolls on Dunlop D307 N tubeless tyres, which come as a 90/90×12 front and 90/100×10 rear.

We are family: The Burgman Street 125 EX joins the Avenis 125 and Address 125 as Suzuki’s CBT-friendly scooter range. All three look to cash in on current high demand.

Stretch it out: The flat floorboard area is joined by two forward footboards to allow the rider to stretch out their legs for a little more comfort.

Hooking on: Under the seat you get two thick hooks, which are said to allow you to hang helmets when parked up

Stand and deliver: The Burgman gets a side and centre stand as standard, which will assist with cleaning, maintenance and parking in tight spots.
