Lightweight electric off-road specialists Surron have launched an updated version of their Light Bee X, priced at £3999 and promising more power and precision in the dirt.

Stripped of the road-focussed extras found on the Light Bee L1E, the X model is designed to spend as much time as possible in the mud and is not road legal, with a new 10.7bhp mid-mounted motor bringing a claimed 32.5% increase in acceleration performance.

Zero to 31mph comes in a claimed 2.7 seconds, with the bike continuing on to 46mph. That’s not setting any speed records, but it’s plenty for exploring a rutted track in rural England – all without the shrill of a two-stroke, or thud of a four-stroke petrol engine, to keep the local curtain twitchers on side.

Being electric, the Light Bee X also produces a fairly bonkers 196.2lb.ft of torque at peak output – a stat made even more impressive when you consider an overall kerb weight of just 57kg (said to be the lightest in its class).
The updated motor comes after more than eight years of customer feedback on the original bike and is capable of spinning past 5500rpm. According to Surron themselves, peak power can be maintained from 1500rpm to 5000rpm, with the rider controlling things via an automatic twist-and-go throttle set-up.
This new motor is held in place by a forged aluminium alloy frame and juiced up via an 11.6kg lithium-ion battery pack that can be removed in just 10 seconds and takes two hours to charge from 20% to 80%.

The bike gets a choice of Sport and Eco riding modes, offering differing levels of power delivery. In Sport mode, you also get battery regen to help manage range. This power pack gets an IP-67 rating (meaning it can be submerged in water for up to 30 minutes) and the peak range of 46 miles is achieved at 25mph.
Away from the performance, there’s also plenty of movement in the suspension to head off the beaten track, with 270mm of ground clearance and a carrying capacity of 100kg.
Up front, the inverted coil spring hydraulic front forks promise a claimed 200mm of movement, with the fully-adjustable rear shock 210mm of wheel travel.

This is paired with a 19in front and new 18in rear spoked wheel (helping with tyre choice), shod with knobby tyres as standard, and a two-stage adjustable throttle curve to tailor performance to your riding style and scenario.
Unfortunately, given their impressive performance, easy dimensions, and agility, Surron motorcycles have been favoured by some in criminal activity, damaging the brand’s reputation. If you purchase one, be sure to invest in some solid security products.
