Learner legal Mutt Stravaig 125 adventure bike offers big bike features at an affordable price

Who says adventure bikes have to be giant 1300cc beasts? Certainly not West Midlands-based Mutt who’ve just revealed this CBT-friendly adventurer which packs many of the creature comforts of its big bore adversaries at at a much more wallet-friendly price.

The well-equipped Stravaig 125 comes with a host of goodies – including three-piece panniers – all for just £3495 (+OTR). For reference, that’s roughly one fifth of the price of a BMW R1300GS, and just one third of Aprilia’s middleweight Tuareg 660 – albeit at a huge performance deficit.

Great spec for the money

For your money, you get proper adventure tourer ergos, luggage, an adjustable screen, crash bars (including rear bars to protect your panniers), a centrestand, USB charging port, and upside-down forks.

There’s also a plastic sump guard as standard but don’t expect it to stave off any significant rock strikes. To top off the rugged and ready for action look, paint options come in matt black or matt green.

Mutt rather grandly say the Stravaig is: “Designed for those who crave adrenaline-fuelled journeys off the beaten path, the Stravaig is not just a motorcycle; it’s a declaration of freedom and a call to explore the untamed roads that await.”

How does the Stravaig perform

What performance the little 125 can muster comes from a 124cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled four-stroke DOHC, four-valve motor. There’s 12.3 bhp and 7lb.ft of torque on tap which is responsible for shifting the 175kg claimed kerb weight.

Braking comes via a hydraulic linked single disc setups at both ends; however, the front gets a sliding, twin piston caliper to scrub off speed, whereas the rear caliper makes use of a single piston.

Fuel range should be excellent with a 14-litre capacity to play with. Although no figure is quoted from Mutt, its frugal base should mean the Stravaig is good for well over 200 miles to a tank.

While the Stravaig’s looks are clearly inspired by larger bikes in the adventure segment, Mutt have bucked the trend when it comes to seat height, giving the 125 a short-leg-friendly stand over of just 780mm – that’s 10mm lower than a Honda CBF125.

The Stravaig is available in showrooms now.

Big brother

Mutt also have a larger Stravaig sibling to sit alongside the 125. The 35.5 bhp Stravaig 401 is also available and comes in at £4995 + OTR. For that, you get removable, three-piece aluminium luggage, a TFT dash, tyre pressure monitoring, twin front disc brakes, an adjustable windscreen and tubeless spoked wheels with a more off-road ready 19” rim upfront.

Change of pace

This is Mutt’s first foray into the adventure bike scene. The Brummie bike builder is best known for its small capacity retro machines, of which there is a seven strong lineup of scrambler styled bikes to choose from.

Familiar looks

If you think you’ve seen the Stravaig silhouette before, you’d be right. It’s essentially the same bike as the Sinnis T125 Enduro (formerly the Sinnis Terrain) with some minor tweaks including colour options. The copy paste approach is no bad thing however, as the old Sinnis Terrain was a popular machine, with owners reporting solid reliability bar a few minor niggles. Some owners have even ridden their 125 Terrains from the UK to Mongolia.
