Video: BMW release F850GS teaser

BMW are the latest manufacturer to release a teaser video. Giving us just enough info of their new F850GS to keep us excited ahead of next week’s Milan show, where most of 2018’s bikes will be officially revealed for the first time.

The F850GS will be an entirely new bike for 2018, replacing the F800GS, which proved a capable machine, but is a bit long in the tooth compared to newer adventure models such as Honda’s Africa Twin, the Ducati Multistrada 950 and KTM’s 1090 Adventure R.

The most notable change for the new GS is the completely new motor. It will gain around 50cc over the older 798cc GS, which should see power move somewhere close to 100bhp – bringing it closer to the competition.

It’s believed that the new engine – like the current Honda Africa Twin –will feature a 270-degree firing order, making the bike sound and feel more like a v-twin.

The new GS ditches the tubular-steel frame in favour of an aluminium chassis, something that was identified earlier this year, when MCN published exclusive spy shots of the new machine being tested.

The dated analogue clocks will be a thing of the past, with the new GS sharing the bang-up-to-date TFT dash that was introduced to the R1200GS recently. It’ll bring new levels of rider interaction to the F850GS, with Bluetooth connectivity allowing the bike to pair with a smartphone or a headset.

It’s clear that the new bike will be a giant leap forward over the current model and should return the middleweight GS to the front of the adventure pack. Despite the changes, it’s clear that the bike will still be a genuine dual-purpose machine, with the 21-inch front and 18-inch rear still marking it as a capable off-roader.

The new F850GS will be unveiled at the EICMA show in Milan on November 7 at 9:30am CEST.
