Can't wait for an FZ8? Top used alternatives for under 4k

1 of 6

Is 800 the new 600 in the world of middleweight all-rounders? BMW has the F800R, Aprilia has the Mana and now Ducati and Yamaha are both joining the fray with the Monster 796 and FZ8.

The new FZ8 will cost £7920 and the half-faired FZ8 Fazer will be a grand more. But if you’re looking for a more wallet-friendly middleweight now, we have tons of examples going in MCN Bikes For Sale. Here’s just a few:

BMW F800S

2006 BMW F800S – 16k miles – £3999
The F800S is a supremely practical yet fun all-rounder with belt-drive, stable handling and a torquey 798cc parallel-twin motor. Sips fuel too. Also consider naked F800R version.
We say: Expensive compared to competition, but good quality.

Kawasaki Z750S

2005 Kawasaki Z750S – 10k miles –  £2450
The Z750 boasts a handy 100bhp. Suspension has been widely criticised, but budget for a trip to Maxton and you have a bargain.
We say: The half-faired Z750S doesn’t look as sharp as the naked one, but makes for a better all-rounder.

Honda VFR800 VTEC

2002 Honda VFR800 VTEC – 5k miles – £3100
Don’t forget the VFR. It’s got sportsbike styling, superb handling and a silky 107bhp V4 motor.
We say: The VTEC gives a little step up in power at 7k revs. Some hate it, so test ride before buying.

Ducati Monster 800

2003 Ducati Monster 800 – 10k miles – £3399
The original 800 Monster is iconic and desirable yet lacking in practicality compared to the Japanese competition.
We say: Look for the M800S version which came with alloy swinger, bikini fairing and carbon bits.

Yamaha TRX850

1997 Yamaha TRX850 – 21k miles – £1700
The TRX850 is a road-orientated sportster with loads of character – 270 degree crank makes it feel like a v-twin.
We say: Bargain on the used market and the styling has aged well.
