Honda considers offering tailor-made bikes

1 of 1

Honda is considering a scheme to offer a choice of engines, bodywork and paintwork options to hang on a one-size-fits-all frame.

The scheme could hit UK dealers as early as 2004. And while it’s something car buyers are used to, this is something that bike makers have held off from doing, usually because the production runs of bikes are so much smaller than large volume cars. Honda believes it’s worth trying to give them the edge over rivals.

One source said: ” We all know riders who’ve held on to their cash because a bike’s engine just didn’t suit their needs.

” Introducing a system where we have a generic rolling chassis that takes a variety of very different engines is a logical way to go. And it’s something Honda is looking seriously at introducing. ”

So seriously, in fact, that the frame already exists, and you’ll see it on British roads soon. It’s the one forming the backbone of the new CB900 Hornet.

” The Hornet frame would suit the idea well, ” our source confirmed. ” It would only need minor modifications to take a range of big engines.

” They could include the FireBlade’s, the SP-1 or SP-2’s, the VFR’s and, obviously, the Hornet’s too. ”

That means buyers would have inline four, V-twin and V-four options.

Beefed up suspension and brakes, as well as modified riding positions, could also be offered, although it’s too early to be specific.

Our man said: ” Obviously, the engines weigh different amounts and that would affect the front/rear weight distribution and the handling to a degree. And some are more powerful than others, as well as having different applications. That may have a bearing on what rolling chassis components are needed.

” I can’t confirm Honda is looking at introducing a system as intricate as this, but they would certainly explore the possibility at the development stage. ”

” It might mean delays between ordering and delivery. But we’re listening to customers all the time and, if that’s what they want, that’s what we’ll ask Honda Japan for. ”

Tell us what you’d most like to see. Are engine options vital, or is the paint that would sway you most? Would you like brake, suspension and riding position options, too? Is there anything else you’d like Honda to introduce?

The firm will listen. Post your thoughts on the news board (follow the link right) or e-mail keith.farr@emap.com
