Tech watch: KTM boost bonkers new 1390 Super Duke R with variable valve timing!

KTM have added their firstever variable valve system to the 187.4bhp 2024 1390 Super Duke R, and it’s a technology that’s sure to filter through to more models as they adopt the new 1350cc V-twin engine.

We’ve seen a variety of variable cam systems on bikes over the years, from Honda’s Hyper-VTEC design – which simply disengages half the valves at low rpm – to the cam-phasing systems seen on several modern Ducatis, Harley- Davidsons and others, which alter the valve timing.

But it’s rarer to see bikes that can change the cam duration and lift, which is what KTM’s cam shifting system achieves – with the aim of achieving a broader spread of power and torque across the rev range.

Not that the old 1290 range was ever lacking in that department…
