Techwatch: Inside Honda's E-Clutch

Honda have launched a new E-Clutch system for their 2024 four-cylinder CBR650R and CB650R range, which
allows riders to pull away, stop, and shift without ever pulling in a lever.

All you need to do is select the desired gear with your left foot.

The tech was debuted at EICMA last week alongside a returning CBR600RR, updated Fireblade, naked CB1000 Hornet, plus a revised 500 twin range.

To find out how it differs from the company’s existing Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) found on the likes of the Africa Twin, MCN sat down with E-Clutch Large Project Leader Junya Ono.

“It’s by no means only aimed at beginners,” the 38-year-old told MCN.

“Equally, it’s for step up users, or expert users, so we’re looking at a very wide range of customer base.

“The plan is to have – let’s say – a dividing line between the DCT and the Honda E-Clutch, but to keep going with both… this system is aimed at being an evolution of a manual transmission.”
