Paralysed motorcyclist gets back in the saddle and defies the odds to pass full test on three wheels

A motorcyclist who was left paralysed from the chest down has fought his way back into the saddle, passing his full bike test just months after getting his CBT.
Jacob Davies-Pyke was involved in a serious crash in December 2022, suffering life-changing spinal injuries that meant he’d never walk again.
Quickly, he began the process of rebuilding his life and before even leaving hospital, he’d researched the logistics of acquiring a full licence.

“Before the accident, I used my motorcycle not just for commuting, but it was a big part of my social life as well,” Jacob said. “My motorcycle gave me a new dimension to my life. This was something I simply did not want to give up.”
After researching his options, Jacob settled on three wheels as his way back into biking, finding for a Can-Am Spyder which he had adapted for his mobility needs.
Getting the necessary training proved to be a major challenge, however, with most riding schools unable to accommodate his disability or the machine itself – that was until he got in-touch with Phoenix Motorcycle Training.

“I had almost given up hope when I called Phoenix. They were very understanding and told me that they were more than happy to help.”
From there, he worked through his CBT, using his Can-Am for the task, before undertaking additional training and soon tackling his full test.
After bagging the licence (restricted to trikes), Jacob said: “I can now regain the freedom and independence that I felt I had almost lost forever. I hope my story will inspire others with disabilities. Life does not have to end just because you have a spinal cord injury.”
