James Toseland charity abseil raises £10k for Sheffield children's hospital

Double World Superbike champion James Toseland has helped raise over £10,000 for Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust by abseiling 160ft down the side of a building wearing his orange, white, and blue GSE Racing Ducati leathers.

The fan favourite and current Eurosport WSB commentator tackled the side of Sheffield Hallam University’s Owen Building on Sunday, March 19 in hopes of raising awareness for The Children’s Hospital Charity. He was joined in the abseil by four-wheeled rising star, Rowan Campbell-Pilling.

“The abseil was absolutely brilliant, and the Owen Building is much taller than you think,” Toseland said in a statement. “It was incredible to experience the abseil alongside ambassadors and fundraisers for the charity, especially those who were taking part because they want to give back after their own experiences at Sheffield Children’s.”

He continued: “Thank you to everyone who supported us all. It was a fun and exhilarating day; I’d recommend it to anyone!” 

The money raised by the charity patron will go towards specialist treatment for children across the world and will help by fund life-saving equipment, facilities, research, and more.

Prior to this event, James had already raised thousands for the cause, including auctioning off some of the leathers from his racing career, and leading the annual Easter Egg run. In 2022 alone, a suit from his 2001 season went for £1280.

“We’re blown away by the support and the amount raised for this event, we can’t thank everyone involved enough,” Events Fundraising Officer Phoebe Marriott added. “The funds raised mean the charity can continue to ensure the team at Sheffield Children’s has exactly what they want, when they need it, to deliver the best possible care for its patients.”

Take the plunge with James Toseland for charity

Two-time World Superbike Champion James Toseland will abseil down the 160ft Owen Building at Sheffield Hallam University this weekend to raise awareness for The Children’s Hospital Charity – and you could join him.

There are still places left for the abseil with James on Sunday, March 19, who will be taking the plunge in his motorcycle leathers.

Fundraisers are required to pay a non-refundable £24 deposit to secure their place, which covers the cost of the abseil, with a promise to raise a minimum of £100 to support Sheffield Children’s. The public are also welcome to attend to watch the event with the abseil scheduled for 10am.

Children’s Hospital Charity Events Fundraising Officer, Phoebe Marriott, said: “It’s brilliant to have James involved in the abseil this year. James helps us raise funds throughout the year, and we’re grateful for his support.

“Last year, I took part myself and the best part was the community support due to the city centre location where members of the public could clearly watch the abseil and cheer everyone on. It’s a great day to support each other and raise money for an important cause.”

Toesland will be auctioning the leathers worn for the Charity Abseil after leading Theo’s Egg Run on April 9, an annual event held on Easter Sunday that sees hundreds of motorcycle riders take part in a procession through Sheffield to raise money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
