Super gran rides again for her 90th birthday

A great-grandmother from Wigan has proved you are never too old to get back on a bike as she celebrated her 90th birthday last week with a ride on the back of a Harley-Davidson with the north-west chapter of the Widow Sons Masonic Bikers Association.

Barbara Morris had ridden a Royal Enfield 350 back in the 1950s and has passed on that passion to her children and grandsons who all ride. Years ago, Barbara had promised herself a ride on an American muscle bike if she reached 90.

That wish was granted by son Martin Morris, who, together with members of the Widow Sons, surprised her by picking her up from the care home where she has lived for the past year.

The motorcade of 14 bikes, with Barbara riding pillion on a Harley-Davidson, set off from Ambleside Bank Care Home in Ince, Wigan on a seven-mile journey to the White Lion in Wrightington for a celebratory meal.

Granddaughter Kirsty Harvey said: “My grandma’s face was a picture when she realised what was happening. It was a complete surprise. The nursing home staff were in on it so had got her dressed up nicely, curled her hair, put on some make up. She absolutely loved the thrill of being back on the back of a bike.”

As for the lady of the day? She was elated, saying she “felt the years melt away” as the wind blew across her face and that she “felt 21 again”.

We cannot wait to see what Barbara gets up to for her centenary!
