A taste of yesteryear: Vintage Motorcycle Club announces loan scheme

The VMCC (the Vintage Motorcycle Club) has opened the doors of its extensive garage of modern and pre-war classics to its members by offering free loans.

Over forty motorcycles, located across the UK, are available and include a 1923 Matchless 350 to a 1989 Yamaha FJ1200.

The scheme has been launched to introduce riders to the joys and quirks of vintage two-wheelers. “We want as many people as possible to experience what it’s like to ride older motorcycles and this is the best way to do it,” said VMCC Chairman, Mario Costa-Sa.

“There are some restrictions on some of the older bikes, and members are expected to be responsible for the machines in their care, they will be covered by Members Club insurance.”

The VMCC garage has expanded rapidly over recent years through member donations and includes a whole selection of 1920s ‘flat tank’ machines complete with hand gear change and period brakes.

The range includes a 1963 BSA A50 as well as a line up of Japanese classics, such as a 1980 Honda CB250RS and the FJ1200.

There’s also a range of small capacity bikes, including a 50cc Jawa Mustang, a Mobylette and Yamaha Passola, plus 125cc learners. Despite the impressive line-up the club would like to expand its garage further.

“We’d love to be able to offer a Honda CB750,” said Mario, “so watch this space.” The club even has a Ford Transit and three bike trailers to help members move their bikes around.

There is no charge for the loan and no deposit is required and anyone can join the club, even non-bike owners, with a 12-month membership costing £42 with lower rates for younger members.

The scheme has been praised within the industry with Chairman of the British Motorcycle Federation, Jim Freeman, saying: “Well done VMCC. As someone who owns, and has owned, some of the bikes mentioned, it’s a great idea, a taste of the experience without getting bogged down in the details of buying and running one.”

Responsible riders who are not members are also allowed access with applications for machines dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
