Ixon introduce universal airbag system for any jacket

French motorbike gear manufacturer, Ixon, have produced an airbag system that can be worn under any motorbike jacket. The system uses a smart electrical “In&box” system that analyses the biker’s movements 1000 times per second and uses a set of algorithms to detect a fall.

This “brain” is built into a CE-approved back protector along with the inflation canister where it operates completely wirelessly with a battery life of 20 hours.

The unit’s 12 litres of compressed air are concentrated around areas of common injury – the neck, spine, collarbones, thorax and abdomen.

Although new to the market, a similar system has been tested extensively on track for three years in MotoGP, endurance racing and French Superbikes. A specialist algorithm is available for use on track by customers and the system can be switched between track and road.

The vest itself costs around £380 with the ‘brain’ costing the same again, but customers have the option to lease the In&box unit rather than buying it outright, for around £10-per-month.

This subscription gives access to several extra features, including access to all the algorithm updates and optimisations and an unlimited warranty.

What’s more, if you only ride six months of the year, you can cancel your subscription at any time and return the ‘brain’ unit to Ixon and then start it up again when you want to get your bike back out.
