Great rides of the North: Part 3

1 of 1

As recommended by MCN’s #ride5000miles members, we’ve got six of the best roads to ride in the North of Britain this week.

The number three road to ride is this Scottish beauty. Yesterday’s ride was a Welsh wonder from Crossgates to Newtown. You can also check out the start of our great rides of the South here.

A816 from Lochgilphead to Oban, nominated by Geoff Blackburn

Geoff says: “When asked about my favourite roads in the UK, I tend to look north of the border! Best of the best is quite possibly the A816 from Lochgilphead to Oban. Either way is awesome, with the road offering a superb mix of twisties, fast open roads and everything in between.”

Length:

37 miles

Love it because:

Another Scottish delight, the A816 has everything – from long straights, to tight turns, all the while taking in breath taking scenery. This includes Ardentallen Bay, which it hugs tightly before heading back inland. It’s pure joy.

Take a picture at:

Ardentallen Bay offers great views and an unrivalled photo opportunity on this ride.

Stop for a cuppa at:

Grab a drink and a tasty bite to eat at the Chartroom II Bistro in Arduaine, on the outskirts of Loch Melfort. This is also a great stop for a photo.

Watch out for:

The A816 has seen some huge accidents, especially for bikers. Watch out for hidden turns and sudden drops into the lochs below.

Best bike for the job:

We’d recommend a sports tourer for this one – best of both worlds.
