Yamaha team up with Krugger Motorcycles for MotoGP inspired Yard Built Supercharged SR400

1 of 20

Yamaha’s Yard built programme, which sees heritage models handed over to some of the world’s leading customisers has so far churned up some absolutely stunning builds. Their newest addition in the form of this SR400, built by Belgian builder Fred Bertrand of Krugger Motorcycles, has just taken things to a new level.

The build pays homage to and taking inspiration from close friend Bernard Ansaiau, who is a mechanic for a certain Italian who goes by the name of Valentino Rossi. As such, being a mechanic for the Doctor, surgical precision in every detail elevates this build into something truly special.

Rossi isn’t the only rider on Bernard’s CV though, with legends in the likes of Wayne Rainey, Kenny Roberts, Randy Mamola and Norick Abe all playing a part in the Belgian’s dazzling mechanical past in the design.

Fred and Bernard agreed to use the SR400 as the base for the design, which harks back to the spirit of the 1970s as a tribute to the Yamaha TZ and is finished in the classic Yamaha Speedblock design which also features the names of all the riders from Bernard’s incredible career.

It’s more than just a fancy looking SR though. Some serious work has gone into the engine with the most noticeable item being the Aisin 300 supercharger and its custom plenum chamber. It’s complemented by a one-off custom stainless steel exhaust system and an S&S 48mm carb that replaces the fuel injection system.

The brakes have been upgraded to some more serious kit offered by Beringer. The forks have been polished and lowered and are balanced with a pair of Fox shocks at the rear. Touching the tarmac is a set of Dunlop K81s, which were inspired by the first tyre to lap the Isle of Man TT over 100mph.

The devil is definitely in the details of this build. The switches are hidden behind a tiny custom cowl that sits at the front above a custom triple clamp and bars. A Motogadget speedo keeps the lines of the bike neat and a custom tail unit hides the electrical components.

Yamaha Motor Europe Marketing Coordinator Cristian Barelli commented: “I think it’s impossible to have a custom machine that lives and breathes our racing history better than this. It’s such a beautiful bike and the longer and closer you look at it the more detail you find to enjoy. You wouldn’t normally associate the SR400 with MotoGP racing but this build is as genuine and authentic as it’s possible to get, a real Yard Built special!”

This stunning SR400 sits alongside a host of other big name builds such as El Solitario’s ‘Big Bad Wolf’, Alexandre Santos and Osvaldo’s ‘CS_07 Gasoline’ and Numbnut Motorcycles’ ‘Son of Time’.
