Bike sales are still going up according to the latest stats from the Motorcycle Industry Association.

Figures have so far been good with an increase so far over last year’s statistics of 5.6% with a total of 85,413 registrations by August 31.

This has been helped by a healthy 4% growth last month with 8341 units sold. Head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association, Stephen Latham commented: “In what is traditionally a low volume month for motorcycle registrations, it was encouraging to see a strong 4% growth in sales over the same period last year – ahead of the 66-plate change.”

Mid-capacity bikes ranging from 126-650cc have seen the largest growth in both August and also in the year to date with a 17.9% increase in the August year-on-year figures selling 1220 units, helping to put the overall growth up by 9.2% so far this year.

Small capacity machines followed with 50-125cc sales up 12.2% over last August having sold 4019 units.

Yamaha’s mighty MT-10 topped large capacity sales in the month with 85 unit sales while the Honda CB125F was model that topped the small-capacity bikes and also shifted the most overall units with 197 bikes sold in total.

Honda continue to lead the tables in total sales with 1330 bikes sold last month with Yamaha next after shifting 1181 machines. Lexmoto are in a strong third position at 866.

Latham added: “There is a general feeling of confidence among the big bike dealers that the market will continue with the upward trend we have been seeing over the months. We expect the September market to be strong as the enthusiastic bikers return to the market to purchase larger prestigious machines with the new 66-plate.”
