Want to be a race mechanic? There's a new school for that

A brand-new educational experience is set to open at Donington Park, teaching budding race mechanics how to work on race bikes.

The school, which is being organised by the Motorsport Industry Association, begins in November and will for 10 weeks until next February. All teaching will be done on a Saturday and Sunday and students will receive a total of 160 hours tuition.

This will be taught over eight-hour days by experienced tutors and all applicants must be aged 18 or over. At the end of the course, there will be a dynamic test, which will put into practise all they have learned.

The course costs £2950 and is aimed at students already studying mechanics at technical college, mechanics wanting to move into motorsport, motorsport mechanics wanting further tuition or racers wanting to gain more practical understanding.

Lessons will take place at Donington Park, with practical sessions held in the garages and a suite used for the classroom elements.

Topics include assembly and disassembly of front forks and working on a bike’s electronics and powertrain. The bikes being worked on will include a Yamaha R1, Suzuki GSX-R1000 and an Aprilia RS125.

At the end of the school, the top five students will be guaranteed a season’s work placement with a team professional championship, though the course organisers have yet to finalise which team will be offering the placement.

At the moment, just five out of 20 places have been taken on the bike course – so there is still time to get involved.
