New Triumph Tiger Explorer launches on Monday

We’re riding Triumph’s 2016-model Explorer at its world launch on Monday.

The out-going model hit showrooms in 2012 and was Triumph’s first big-capacity adventure bike. Powered by a liquid-cooled 1215cc inline three-cylinder engine it was fast and sounded fantastic, but it didn’t quite have what it took to beat the all-conquering BMW R1200GS.

Triumph hopes that will all change with the new model. It has a tweaked motor, which produces more power and complies with Euro 4 noise and emission regulations. For the first time the Explorer boasts electronic rider aids, which, depending on which model you choose, include superbike-spec traction control, rider modes, a ‘Hill Hold Control’ and cornering ABS.

Other toys include an electric screen, which is a first for an adventure bike, heated grips and seats, cruise control, USB and 12V power sockets, centre stand, an on-board computer and immobiliser.

The old Explorer was often criticised for having a soft chassis set-up and poor brakes. Triumph has addressed this with a new semi-active suspension system, or fully-adjustable WP forks and shock, depending on the model you choose.

Triumph aren’t releasing prices, weight or power figures until the launch on Monday, but we do know they’re be six Explorer versions with ascending levels of spec, divided into two ranges: the road-oriented Tiger Explorer XR and the off-road Tiger Explorer XC.

Check back here on Monday and on MCN’s facebook and twitter feeds to read our first impressions. We believe we’ll be riding the all-singing off-road version: the Tiger Explorer XCA.
