Brough come home

The first owner of an all-new Brough Superior SS100 was handed the keys to his motorcycle at the Carole Nash MCN London Motorcycle show during the weekend.

Eric Patterson, 69, is no stranger to the Brough Superior brand as he is a world land speed record holder on a highly-modified Brough at America’s Bonneville salt flats.

Eric has known Brough Superior boss Mark Upham since the early 1970s, and as soon as he saw the new bike he instantly placed an order for the machine bearing the number two stamp on its chassis.

The SS100 features a completely new 997cc water-cooled V-twin which was designed specifically for this bike and has been developed by Akira Engineering, the same company that builds and tunes the engines for the Kawasaki World Superbike team for racers Jonathan Rea and Tom Sykes.

Brough Superior were at the event to show off various versions of the bike that will be priced at around £45,000 in the UK market but will be individualised for each owner.

After seeing his machine on the Brough Superior stand, Eric told MCN: “This is only the second new bike I have ever bought! As soon as I saw this bike I knew I was going to have to have one. I went over to the factory to see the set-up and was impressed all round. I agreed to buy one immediately and paid there and then.

“That was two years ago and I always knew it was going to be a wait for the Brough to be made ready. My bike will be chassis number two, and it’s the first one in England. Chassis number one will be kept by the factory.

“My bike is going to be a bit different when it’s completely finished and there is still a bit of work to be done on it. I am having an aerodynamic top fairing like the land speed record machine and a dual seat will be fitted too. I want to be able to take a pillion.”
