Custom builders: What we'd buy for £3000

Bikes for sale

We’re all guilty of daydreaming about our dream garage, should money be no option. But what if you only have £3000 to spend on a bike?

We spoke to three legendary custom builders to see what they’d choose.

Roland Sands, Boss of Roland Sands Design

2012 Kawasaki ZX-10R

“I’d buy a modern, crashed superbike and turn it into a vintage-style high-bar racebike. There’s something about old racebikes, the pure performance with no wind protection, that takes me back to being a kid at Laguna watching Eddie Lawson wrestle a KZ round the corkscrew. A 2012 ZX-10R that’s not bent, That would do the job.”

Jens vom Brauck,Owner of Cologne-based custom builders JvB-moto

1978 Yamaha SR500

“The SR500 means a lot to me; it’s what got me interested in customs. They have so much potential – they’re very minimal and only weigh 170kg, so there’s little excess fat to start with. I have an old beaten-up SR500 that I use everyday, but for £3000 I’d buy another and turn it into an off-road bike.”

Kev Taggart,Creative Director, Spirit of the Seventies

1997 Honda VFR800

“I would be tempted by a pre-injection VFR800 so I could strip it and create my own V4 neo-classic racer. That engine/chassis/swingarm combination was sublime, and with some fancy bodywork, forks, rear shock and wheels (plus countless more bits and pieces) it would make an awesome project bike.”
