Supersport bikes for under £2000

We’ve looked around to find some of the best supersport deals you can get for less than £2000…

Yamaha YZF600R Thundercat
Yamaha’s Thundercat arrived in 1996 to replace the aging FZR600R as the firm’s supersport bike and quickly gained a large army of fans. Although it was never the sportiest of 600s, especially when compared to the likes of the frantic 1997 Suzuki GSX-R600 SRAD or agile 1995 Kawasaki ZX-6R, the Thundercat ticked all the right boxed in terms of practicality.

With a £2000 budget you can easily get a 1996-1999 Thundercat with around 20,000 miles on the clock, which makes it an absolute bargain. The motor is bulletproof (ensure the front sprocket nut is done up tight) and the riding position very relaxed. As a first dip into the supersport market, or even a cheap tourer, the Thundercat is a great choice. The only issue is the name, which is just as silly in 2013 as it was in 1996…

1997 Suzuki GSX-R600 SRAD
The first of a new generation of GSX-R600s that showed Suzuki meant business. Essentially a mini-GSX-R750 SRAD, the 600 is gutless but looks superb and is a proper track weapon once its suspension is sorted. The build quality is a touch suspect, however the performance isn’t when the engine is singing.

1999 Honda CBR600F
The first generation of CBR to use an aluminium frame is also one of the very best models you can buy. While the 1999 bike has carbs rather than the fuel-injection of the 2001 update, it is basically the same machine. A great all-rounder with amazing reliability and good build quality.
