One to tick off the bucket list

I live in Canada and for many years I have come to the UK where I have an adventure with my friend and racing enthusiast Elwyn Roberts from Wales.

Whether it’s in the Isle of Man or the Ulster, Elwyn is such an enthusiast. He is known by everyone in the racing world and his collection of trophies and memorabilia is just outstanding.

I have been introduced to racing heroes like Phil Read, Crosby, Ago, Baker and many others. It means so much to me to have a friend like Elwyn.

In 2010 he took me to Imola for a classic bike event as I raced TZs many years ago. There I was introduced to Steve Wheatman who owns several RG500s. After a chat Steve asked me if I would join his team and ride his bikes!

Months went by and Steve offered me a ride at Mallory Park for the Festival of 1000 Bikes in the Legends class. This was a dream come true!

At the end of March I had a heart attack and my wife thought that was it – no riding. She said I would die if I tried to ride.

I promised to look after myself and if I didn’t think I could ride, I wouldn’t. I didn’t tell Steve as I was afraid he wouldn’t let me ride.

We arrived at Mallory and I saw Steve, Paul and Martin working on the bikes – I was to ride a RG500 mk8.

I managed to get a quick practice session to learn the track. Later in the afternoon was the Legends class and out I went along with 30 others – all true legends.

Roberts and Steve Baker came past and Phil Read leaned on me out of Gerrards(great stuff). I had no problems with my heart and I signed autographs with a shaking hand such was the adrenaline.

I truly thank Steve for trusting me with the bike and this year I am coming back again as it#s my 65th birthday just prior to the event.
