Bikers asked for views on anti-tampering plans

British motorcyclists have been asked for views on a raft of European proposals for bikes including mandatory ABS and measures to prevent tuning.

A consultation launched by the Department for Transport gives riders until October 28 to respond.

Roads Minister Mike Penning said: “This is a chance for both motorcycle manufacturers and riders to have their say on this new EU Regulation.

“I hope as many people as possible will respond to the consultation and give us the benefit of their knowledge and experience as we progress towards the negotiating stage on these new rules.”

Tuning could become impossible and home-servicing severely hampered under European Commission proposals.

All new bikes could get so-called on-board diagnostic (OBD) systems capable of detecting non-standard parts and triggering a warning light until the ‘fault’ is rectified by a dealer.

One aim is to prevent any modifications to the ‘powertrain’ which rider groups fear could include anything from the throttle to rear tyre.
