Solar roads to generate heat, light and stay dry

1 of 1

An American scientist has been given a grant by the US Department of Transportation to carry on work on his idea of roads that generate solar power to create LED light and keep warm to fend off ice.

Solar Roadways owner Scott Brusaw has been given £100,000 to research the idea further.

He reckons the solar roadway idea could provide energy for homes, street lighting and could contain thousands of LEDs to provide lighting. In winter they could generate a small amount of heat to keep ice at bay.

Brusaw claims that if all of the US road network was put to use it could provide enough power for the whole of the country – perhaps even the whole world as there were 25,000 square miles of roads in 2003.
