The dangers of speeding?

A person I know recent attended a speed awareness course rather than the three points and fine, he chose the fine and an afternoon being told about the dangers of speeding, the process is full of rubbish as you would expect and the ultimate aim is to get your money.

I agree completely with educating motorists about the implications of exceeding the speed limit, whether you drive a car, wagon, bus or ride motorbike speed awareness is a good thing. However this does not stop the busses using the bus lane as their own little speed strip, have you ever notice when the bus lane is in use how they attempt to undertake you, exceeding the speed limit.

Anyhow, this friend of mine completed the speed awareness course and then returned to work the following day, without breaking the speed limit of course. What was amazing was that they were told that 40% of fatalities on the roads involve motorbikes and or push bikes; he did not know that already, neither do most people I bet, but if speed awareness is so important to them why is this information only given to those on a speed awareness course, should this not be presented to the masses? Statistically I don’t now if it is higher or lower than 40%, I would be very interested to know.

What’s most annoying is that the government are only educating drivers of this fact after the offence has been committed and they have parted with £60:. Lets be honest, we all exceed the speed limit its not exactly crime of the century as its made out to be nor is speeding the sensible thing to do either. But if these courses for offenders are concentrating the importance of fatalities amongst bikers then they should be doing a little more to prevent such statistics being so high.

Awareness, that’s what is required and the vulnerability of bikers should be paramount of importance to all road users,  it shouldn’t cost £60: to be told of the high number that are killed or seriously injured on the roads. With revenue gained from the speed awareness courses why isn’t this being put into educating all motorists of the dangers to all road users and pedestrians, I want to know what the revenue total is and what they do with it.
