Sheffield’s bus lanes opened to motorcyclists

Motorcyclists have won the right to use Sheffield’s bus lanes permanently.

City councillors voted to allow motorcyclists to use all of the city’s bus lanes with immediate effect following a successful trial period.

The city-wide trial proved that allowing motocyclists to use bus lanes reduced the number of bike accidents, without causing any disruption to bus services or cyclists.

In the five years before the trial started, there were 21 accidents involving motorcyclists along the Abbeydale Road corridor, a third of which were serious.

During the five year trial period this reduced to 13 accidents – a reduction of over one third – with just 31% being considered serious.
