Swerve test violates health & safety
04 May 2009 by
I am about to take my part 1 Motorcycle test and have been doing some reading about the hazard aviodance at 50km/h. Firstly as a ‘born again biker’ may I say during training I found it difficult and in six attempts did not achieve 50km (47 best). However reading a letter about the DSA accepting no liability for anyone injuring themselves left me perplexed to say the least. Section 3(1) of the...

Swerve Test
03 May 2009 by
Well yesterday I did my first training for the new part 1 Test. Oh boy, that swerve is most unnerving. I only have a 125 bike and did the little thing have to work its balls off to get to 50 km/h in the distance given, you’d be fine on the bigger bikes but I agree with what has been written here, you are soooooo preoccupied trying to get the speed and the distance between the trap and the cones is...

New Test Blues
01 May 2009 by
Hi, I read with interest your story regarding a rider crash on the new test. Although I may not have broken my arm (best wishes to Adam for a speedy recovery), I definitely consider myself a victim of the new test too. I took one of the last old-style tests last after a week of DAS on a 500 and unfortunately failed on the classic silly error of not cancelling an indicator, something which I never...

This new test is ridiculous
30 April 2009 by
My girlfriend has just failed the first part of her motorcycle test for not reaching 50kph on the new swerve test, she went past the radar at 49kph. I think this is ridiculous. Are students meant to look where they are going or have their eyes fixed on the speedo? She has been doing very well and loves the days out with her instuctors then she fails on something that seems so petty. Surely a +/-...

30 April 2009 by
Well, the new test is here, very sorry to hear of people dropping the bike on test and, even worse, someone getting hurt. We have our own Mod 1 course for trainee’s to practice on. So far no-one has dropped the bike, we are very carefull with our trainee’s only allowing them to do the avoidance exercise when we think they are up to it. There are one or two things wrong and dangerous with the...

Senior instructor worried about new test
30 April 2009 by
I am the senior instructor with a m/c training school in Scotland and just as other trainers are concerned my worries are probably being echoed around the country. The avoidance exercise, I was informed that this was absolutely a requirement in the new MOd 1 test. As an experienced rider and trainer of over 23yrs I find it hard to comprehend how a novice rider can be expected to perform a manouver...
