Police cagey over speed camera scandal

Police are refusing to provide details on a speed camera scandal which has led to at least 120 cases being dropped.

MCN revealed in March that a Kent Police insider had claimed cases had been dropped amid allegations a speed camera operator “fixed” speeds.

At the time the force issued a statement which included: “We’ve suspended a member of police staff on a procedural matter pending an internal investigation…

“Kent Police is investigating the way in which speed camera equipment was used on a particular occasion.

“We cannot go into detail until enquiries have been completed… It is a procedural issue that relates to the use of the equipment… We have discontinued 120 cases as a precaution while we investigate.”

Asked for an update, the force said today: “There is no update at this stage as we continue with our investigations.”

A spokesman added: “I can confirm that as we previously mentioned 120 cases were discontinued before reaching the courts while we investigate. This number has not changed.”

But our insider now claims 200 cases have been dropped – and that the force plans not to notify everyone affected.
