Motorcycle offences fell in 2006

The number of motoring offences dealt with by the police or traffic wardens involving motorcycles fell from 6000 in 2005, to 5400 in 2006, official statistics released today show.

Figures in the Ministry of Justice’s Motoring Offences and Breath Statistics report, which covers figures to end 2006, show the 9% decrease in motorcycling offences between 2005 and 2006 bucked a previous trend, which saw offences grow 27% between 2004 and 2005.

The report also shows that the number of motorists ticketed for driving while using their mobile phone in 2006 hit 164,900, compared to 126,800 in 2005.

In addition, cameras are now the primary method of obtaining evidence in speeding cases, accounting for 95% of the evidence gathered in 2006, equivalent to 1.99 million offences.
