Bennetts advises us to beware the ides of March

Seeing into the future is a gift many of us may wish we had, but insurance firm Bennetts says it has just that ability, having used claims data to predict Friday March 14 will be the most dangerous day of the year for motorcyclists to be on the road.

The firm bases its forecast on data covering the period June 2006-July 2007, which highlighted five key dates as being the most risky for bikers.

The Friday closest to mid-March came out on top, followed by May 2, May 3, May 25, and June 2.

Mark Fells, marketing director for Bennetts, says the firm hopes to alert riders to the risks associated with those dates by making all road users more aware of the potential for disaster.

The firm’s statistics show that the first half of any year tends to see more claims made than the second half.

Bennett’s data also shows that the most dangerous car in 2007 was the Ford Focus, with one in seven motorcycle collisions involving the middleweight Ford in 2007, with the U.S. firm’s Fiesta and Transit placed second and third respectively.

The Focus replaces the Vauxhall Corsa as the car most likely to be involved in an accident with a motorcycle.
