Not only was it the fastest TT ever seen but also one of the closest plus it also result in an outright lap record which stood for seven years. It was fought out between the two fastest men of the era – Steve Hislop and Carl Fogarty.

Both men had ridden exotic factory Honda RVFs in the 1991 TT but for ’92 they had much less glamorous machines. Hizzy rode the Norton rotary he had previously thought of as a ‘bit of a joke’, while Fogarty was mounted on an ageing Yamaha OW01. 

Fogarty’s final lap was astonishing: his speed of 123.61mph was faster than either rider had managed on far superior factory machinery the year before. Yet it wasn’t enough. After Fogarty flashed across the line there was an agonising three-minute wait before Hislop took the flag to win by just 4.4 seconds.

He had won the Senior TT on a Norton for the first time since Mike Hailwood in 1961. It was the late Scot’s greatest achievement and, for many, the greatest TT race in history.
