Britain's most dangerous road named as the A682

Some of the UK’s most popular biking routes have been named as the country’s most dangerous roads.

A route which attracts thousands of riders every year is the most dangerous road in Britain, a survey has claimed.

A 15-mile stretch of the A682 in Lancashire has seen 100 deaths or serious injuries in a decade and 57% of the collisions have involved a motorcycle, according to the European Road Assessment Programme (EURORAP).

The route, from junction 13 of the M65 and Long Preston, attracts thousands of riders in summer due to challenging bends and beautiful scenery, according to a Eurorap spokeswoman. She said: “It’s very undulating road. It’s got loads of bends and twists and so on, so from a motorcycling point of view it’s quite stimulating. It’s also between some quite attractive spots.”

She said problems arose from the road being “not well marked for motorcyclists who need road markings which guide on the where-you-look-is-where-you-go principle”.
More popular biking routes were among 16 other road sections identified as “medium to high risk” in the survey, with 10 times the number of deaths and serious injuries of the country’s best roads.

On the A54 from Congleton to Buxton, the second most dangerous road in the country according to the survey, 50% of collisions involve a motorcycle.

Third on the list is the A683 between junction 34 of the M6 to Kirkby Lonsdale, where motorcycles are involved in 60% of collisions. The road is one of the main routes for bikers visiting Devils’ Bridge, a hugely popular meeting place for riders from all over the north of England, according to North Yorkshire Police.
