Check your sidestand

Touring in France with my wife on a Honda Superdream loaded with a kitchen sink in 1983, we stopped in front of a hotel ready for a rest after our 10-hour ride. Looking at the building, I put the sidestand out, my wife got off, I rested the bike and next I found myself on the floor with the bike resting on my left leg and not able to move. The sidestand had gone into a very large slit in a manhole!
