Patrick Watson and Helen Antcliff went further than most on their five year and 93,000 mile motorcycle ride, which raised money for the Voluntary Service Overseas and Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

The pair used two bikes on their trip, Bertha, a 1993 BMW R100 GS/PD which carried Pat and Helen down to South Africa and up through South America, and Berthette, a 1989 R80GS which covered the United States, Asia and Europe. The bikes covered 68 countries, and had 30 oil changes, 20 tyres, five gearbox rebuilds and numerous over repairs.

The duo had problems getting insurance for their return fo the UK, but British firm Bikesure stepped in with free insurance, and even did some fundraising of their own to make a donation to the two charities.

“The scariest moment was riding through a herd of elephants near Victoria Falls,” said Helen. Highs included Christmas on the beach in Chile and having a castle to themselves for a night in Syria, with lows including having a camera bag stolen, an eight-day desert crossing in Sudan, and Helent suffering a stroke in Guyana.
