Speeders identified

Riders who’ve made false claims about who was riding their bike at the time of a speeding offence could be in for a nasty surprise.

Police have refused to rule out checking their riding kit against speed camera pictures and charging them with perjury if they’ve lied in court.

The news came after Thames Valley Police announced a scheme to check speed camera pictures of drivers’ faces against the photos on their driving licenses using computer software.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: “This has been used successfully to prosecute people for perjury, if they’ve signed false declarations of who was driving their car.”

Asked whether similar measured could be taken to identify riders from rear-facing photos based on their riding kit, he said: “I can’t rule it out as a possibility.”
