BRAKE's biker's ideas

1 of 1

Road safety group Brake called for young drivers to face a new graduated driving test yesterday. The charity wants learners to train for minimum period and face restrictions after passing their test to keep them out situations seen as high risk, including driving with passengers.

If you think that’s good news, just wait till you hear what they want for bikes.

MCN was at the high-powered meeting in Westminster yesterday (Tuesday) and collared the group’s head of campaigns, Cathy Keeler, after yesterday’s press conference to announce the calls for young drivers. We were expecting something interesting – bear in mind this is the group who last year announced that: “Motorbikers kills kids as well as themselves” – and Keeler didn’t disappoint.

The proposals were part of Road Safety Week, Brake’s annual exercise. To find out why bike industry figures are worried they could deter people from taking up biking, buy next Wednesday’s MCN.

In the meantime, we’d like to know how you think the safety of young and new riders can be improved. Is there something we can do, or is it down to all road users?
