New Transport Secretary

Alistair Darling will be replaced as Government Transport Secretary following a reshuffle of Tony Blair’s Labour cabinet.

Darling will now become trade secretary. Both the BBC and Sky News are reporting Douglas Alexander as his replacement as Transport Secretary, although the DfT told us that the position could not be confirmed.

Alexander as previously served the Government as Minister for e-commerce and Minister of State for Europe. He was born in Glasgow in 1967, and has been the Labour member of Parliament for Paisley South since 1997. He is also qualified as a solicitor and has worked as a speech-writer and parliamentary researcher for Gordon Brown.
