Police road stats lie

Research carried out by Oxford University and published in the British Medical Journal suggests that despite claims by police, just as many people are being admitted to hospital with serious traffic injuries as in 1996.

The Association of British Drivers has cited the report, “Changes in safety on England’s roads: analysis of hospital statistics” as proof that road safety campaigns focussing on speed have failed to deliver.

The report shows that there has been ‘no appreciable reduction in injuries serious enough to warrant hospital admission’ It also claims that the most likely explanation is that the police are under-reporting the numbers injured on the roads, masking an increase in hospital admissions in 2003 and 2004.

MCN has contacted the Government regarding these figures and for the full report and the official response, see MCN on Wednesday, July 5, 2006.
