Brighter signs for bikers

1 of 1

Road signs that light up using electro-luminescent technology have been given the go-ahead by the government and it means added safety for bikers.
The new technology has taken five years to be tested but has now been given the go-ahead by the Department for Transport (DfT).
Bikers benefit not only from the increased visibility of the signs but also because the poles holding the signs can be made of much lighter material because they don’t also have to support heavy lights.

Electro-luminescent technology passes a very low voltage current through a phosphorous covered surface converting electricity directly into light.
Other advantages include better visibility in all light and bad weather, less light pollution and reduced energy consumption.
Manufacturer One2See spokesman Mark Walters told MCN: “The biggest advantage to motorcyclists is the lighter weight of pole that can be used because there is much less weight because no light is needed.
“We have already had a great deal of interest from areas around the country including Surrey, Stirling, Westminster in London, East and West Sussex and Durham.”
