Your Specials Bike 2: Dave Haines Honda NS500R-F

Bought for just £800, this NSR400R-F now boasts an extra 100cc, along with around £6000 of extras, spare parts, and bits still waiting to be fitted.

“I’ve had a few NSs in the past and every time I sold one, I wished I’d kept it. This was intended to just be a standard 400, but I got carried away…
The modifications include a Terry Shepherd 500cc conversion, Jolly Moto pipes, Ohlins rear shock, rebuilt crank (all unused, 2nd hand, from an NS owner in Sweden who determined the spec of the tune on the barrels) plus re-spray to Rothmas colours, with minor change to tail. Oh, and a chromed kick starter!

Most of the work was done by Pidcock’s in Nottingham, with paiting by Dream Machine.

There’s more to come including, hopefully, RVF400 front and rear ends (got but not fitted yet as no-one wanted to do it before I moved it to my home in SW France, and a shock better suited to my weight.
The most difficult parts were persuading my wife it was worth it, and getting the petrol tank to stop leaking from the cap (still not quite sorted).
So far it’s taken 1 year , but I’m nowhere near finished. Road legal and it runs etc, but it’s not finished…..
