Cops get moped patrol

In an attempt to curb anti-social moped and minibike riders, police in Harpenden, Hertfordshire have got the first police 50cc scooter in the county.

The fully-liveried bike will be used to respond to a 45 per cent increase in reported incidents with mopeds and similar small-capacity machines, and one serious accident. The scooter, protective clothing and equipment has been funded by St Albans City and District Council Community Safety Partnership.

“Being out on the bike is an opportunity to engage with young people and be on an equal par with them,” said Sergeant Lewis Ducket. ” The bike will be able to access areas that we are unable to do in a police car and set a good example of riding. The high-visibility presence in areas across Harpenden will tackle and deal with the inappropriate use of motorcycles using section 59 and section 60 powers from the Police Reform Act 2002 to issue warning notices, fixed penalty notices to seize them, and report anyone for a summons.”
