Bristol ignores bikes

1 of 1

Bristol County Council has excluded motorcycles from its ‘Jam Busting June’ campaign, unless they are carrying a pillion.

The Motor Cycle Industry Association has voiced concern about the campaign, which runs contrary to the principles of Local transport Plans, which state motorcycles should be included to help reduce congestion and help create a sustainable transport environment.

Indeed, the City Council wrongly states that motorcycle emissions are not regulated through EU regulations, an error highlighted by the Government Motorcycling Strategy which states “the total level of urban emissions is minimal compared to other traffic sources,” after progressively tightened EU pollution regulations for bikes.

Cyclists are included as jam busters, despite a 47 per cent rise in pedal cyclists Killed or Seriously Injured in 2003, compared with a 15 per cent fall in the number of motorcyclists Killed or Seriously Injured.
