DfT stops new cameras

The Government has put a hold on any new speed cameras being placed on our roads until it is clear whether they work or not.

The Department for Transport is waiting for the release of a report by the University College London in to the effectiveness of speed traps before approving any new applications for camera sites.

The rate of introduction of new cameras has already dropped by a significant amount growing less than one percent last year as opposed to over 30 percent the year before.

A spokesman for the DfT said that the report was supposed to be released in June but has been delayed and there will be no new camera applications approved until the report is released.

MCN and campaign groups have long said that Speed cameras don’t reduce the number of casualties and an exclusive MCN investigation has revealed the truth.

The article in the July 13 edition of MCN shows that counties that have increased their use of cameras have suffered increased road deaths. Counties like Durham that use fewer cameras have seen deaths fall.
