Help SERV save lives

1 of 1

An emergency riding service is looking for volunteers and support to expand its life-saving work in the UK.

Service by Emergency Rider Volunteers (SERV) – also know as ‘Blood Runners’ – take emergency blood and medical equipment to and from hospitals between 7pm and 6am every day free of charge – when official NHS transport services don’t run.

Currently volunteers use their own bikes. Now the registered charity is hoping a dealer or manufacturer will step forward to supply a bike they can use full time. Alternatively, more cash contributions are welcome to allow the charity to buy its own bike.

“Having our own Blood Runners bike would mean we could put emergency service livery on it, which would make it safer for our riders and help them get through traffic,” said Sussex Co-ordinator Dean Wickham.

The charity not only saves lives but also saves NHS money that would have otherwise been spent on taxis or amulances to courier supplies.

The service currently covers Sussex, Kent, Surrey and parts of London, but has received requests from hospitals in other areas including Essex and Cambridgeshire.

It has been running for 23 years. If you can help try www.serv.org.uk for more details.
