The head of London’s traffic division and leading figure in the London Safety Camera Partnership, Chief Superintendent Les Owen, is to face misconduct charges after his official driver was caught doing 82mph in a 40mph zone.

As reported by the Guardian, the Vauxhall Omega carrying Mr Owen reached a top speed of 86mph in a 50mph during a journey along parts of the North Circular and the A12. The driver, PC Mark Bradley, was fined £250 and given six points on his licence, although this was reduced to three on appeal.

The speeding offence came to light after a tape from the car’s video camera was given to experts to examine footage of a fatal road accident the offciers had encountered during their journey. The tape revealed the speeds at which the car had been driven, prompting the experts to pass on details for independent investigation by West Midland police.
