Diesel spills rally success

The KillSpills rally in London to promote the dangers of diesel spills for motorcyclists took place on Saturday, September 11 with a huge turn-out riding from the Ace Cafe to Buckingham Palace.

An official total of 750 bikers turned up at the Ace Cafe, and proceeded along the North Circular, down Park Lane, and past Buckingham Palace. And the orgnaisers delivered their campaign petition, with 10,146 signatures, direct to Number 10 Downing Street, along with their seven point action plan to tackle spillages.

“It was awesome, said campaign leader Stephen Edwards. ” The police said it was the biggest-ever bike rally in London. We had all kinds of bikes, from sportsbikes to cruisers, and when we parked by the side of the road to watch the rally came past, it took 15 minutes for everyone to ride past us. And the police did a great job of escorting us, with 11 officers volunteering to help on their days off.”

The scale of the event has encouraged the team to continue their work, and a similar event is already being discussed for next year, along with further lobbying of the Government and petroleum companies.

“I think we can make a difference, ” said Edwards. ” We wouldn’t have got that level of support if not. But this is now a foundation for the future, and we need to build on it. Our seven-point plan doesn’t require legislation, just educating people particularly when they are filling up at the petrol pumps. It’s all about common sense.”
