BMWs escort torch

1 of 1

Ten BMW R1200GS bikes are guarding the runners carrying the Olympic flame as it makes its way from London to Athens for the start of the summer games on August 13.

Each torch bearer runs for about a quarter of a mile, the traditional length of a stadium lap, in what is the longest (and most participated in) relay in history. The BMW motorcycles are assigned the role of “protecting” the runners and flame for the entire length of the journey. The journey started on March 25 before reaching London at the weekend.

You’ll see other Beemers in action at the Olympics as well – a number of F650GS and K1200LTs will be used as support vehicles in cycling, the marathon and other long distance road races.

In total, BMW Motorrad will provide 35 motorcycles (including a number of F650 GS and K1200 LT models) to play a supporting role in the Olympics at such disciplines as cycling, the marathon, and other long-distance road races.
